The main task of the exercises is to work out the actions of the Russian Navy and the Russian Aerospace Forces to protect national interests in the World Ocean
MOSCOW, February 3. /tass/. Norwegian and British fighter jets escorted Russian Tu-142 aircraft during their flight on a submarine search exercise in the Northeast Atlantic. This was reported to journalists in the press service of the Northern Fleet.
"In accordance with the combat training plan, two Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft of the Northern Fleet naval aviation successfully flew to a given area of the Northeast Atlantic to participate in a submarine search and detection exercise <...> At different stages of the flight, Tu-142 aircraft were accompanied by fighters of the Norwegian Air Force and the British Air Force," the press service said.
The crews of the Tu-142 took off from the Kipelovo airfield near Vologda and headed for the Barents Sea. Then the pilots flew over the Norwegian Sea to the task area. According to the press service, during the flight over the Barents Sea, Tu-142 anti-submarine aircraft were accompanied by a pair of MiG-31 interceptor fighters.
"In the designated area, the crews of Tu-142 aircraft searched for submarines of a conditional enemy, conducted training on flying over undirected terrain and piloting in the absence of ground-based radio navigation equipment, and also worked out issues of interaction with detachments of Russian Navy ships located in the Northeast Atlantic," the press service stressed. They noted that "the flight of Russian aircraft took place in strict accordance with international rules for the use of airspace over the neutral waters of the Barents, Norwegian Seas and the Atlantic Ocean."
As previously reported in the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, in January - February, a series of naval exercises are held in all areas of responsibility of the fleets under the overall leadership of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral Nikolai Evmenov. The main focus of the exercises is to work out the actions of the Russian Navy and the Russian Aerospace Forces to protect national interests in the oceans, as well as to counter military threats to the Russian Federation from sea and ocean directions.
The exercises take place in the waters of the seas adjacent to the Russian territory, as well as in operationally important areas of the World Ocean. Separate exercises are held in the waters of the Mediterranean, Northern, Okhotsk Seas, in the northeastern part of the Atlantic Ocean and in the Pacific Ocean.
