In 1996, Russian border guards guarded the border with Afghanistan in Tajikistan. Every night attempts were made to break through, there were shootouts. Therefore, each outpost was turned into a small fortress.
For example, it was very interesting to dispose of the existing BTR-60PB. These already outdated armored personnel carriers were deprived of engines and chassis, after which they were buried in the ground up to the very tower.
The result was a fairly good protected firing point with powerful weapons. So, the 14.5-mm KPVT could hit targets at a distance of 2000 meters. At 1500 meters, the 7.62-mm PKT beat.
Moreover, the available ammunition significantly exceeded the standard, so the fighters inside could conduct combat operations for a long time.
At each outpost there were several such disguised "sixties" who could support each other with fire.
As far as we know, neither the Afghan militants nor local extremists dared to test the firepower of these armored personnel carriers.
