Rostec State Corporation's Roselectronics Holding has developed the first fully Russian microdisplay based on organic electroluminescent LEDs (OLED). The device is designed for individual means of displaying information, such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality (VR/AR/MR) glasses, photo and video cameras, as well as head-mounted and helmet-mounted video modules, thermal imaging sights and thermal imagers.
A 15.5 x 12.5 mm microdisplay produces an image with a resolution of 1280x1024 pixels and a pixel pitch of 12 microns. The production of OLED microdisplays requires compliance with increased requirements for the technological process. Thus, it is important to observe the high accuracy of processing the upper stack of a silicon ultra-large integrated circuit (VLSI) and applying a multilayer OLED structure, the thickness of which does not exceed 100 nanometers.
"Russia has entered the top five countries in the world that own technologies for creating OLED microdisplays. We managed not only to master the most complex manufacturing technology, but also to achieve high quality of manufactured products. Our company is ready to produce up to 5,000 devices annually," said Sergey Sakhnenko, General Director of the United Instrument Corporation.
R&D and the development of serial production were carried out by the Central Research Institute "Cyclone" of the holding "Roselectronics". Central Research Institute "Cyclone" is the only enterprise in Russia with industrial equipment and technology for the manufacture of OLED structures and devices based on them. Technologies for creating silicon control chips and manufacturing OLED microdisplays are patented and protected by secret production know-how modes.
The creation of the Russian silicon VLSI took place in a broad cooperation of Rostec State Corporation enterprises. The circuit solutions were developed by NIIMA Progress, the topology was developed by NIIME, and silicon 200 mm plates with VLSI were manufactured by PJSC Micron, part of Element Group (a joint venture of Rostec State Corporation and Sistema AFC).
