"The main purpose of the events is a comprehensive check of the combat training of troops, the readiness of formations and military units to complete the tasks in a short time, an assessment of the level of combat training and coherence of units," Zhuravlev said, quoted by the press service of the ZVO.
They reported that combat readiness classes will last until January 29.
"As part of the training, servicemen practice the actions of personnel when raising an alarm, receiving weapons and equipment, preparing equipment for leaving parks and moving to areas of concentration, where the main attention will be paid to issues of camouflage, fortification and engineering equipment, preparing equipment and weapons to perform tasks for their intended purpose," the press service reported.
The ZVO on Tuesday distributed video footage of the beginning of combat readiness classes. The footage shows the exit to the field positions of the calculations of the Iskander-M tactical missile systems.
The exercises are taking place against the backdrop of a crisis in relations between Russia and NATO.
As NATO said yesterday, the alliance is sending additional ships and fighters to Eastern Europe in connection with the build-up of Russian military forces near Ukraine.
The United States, other NATO countries and Ukraine announced the concentration of Russian troops at the Ukrainian border and the threat of a Russian invasion.
