TSAMTO, January 24. According to the information published by Euractiv.bg On January 21, the Bulgarian Navy Command began negotiations on the purchase of two diesel-electric submarines.
As reported by Navyrecognition.com, the counterparty, presumably, is Germany, which is currently building two multifunctional patrol ships for the Bulgarian Navy under the MMPV-90 project.
The Bulgarian Navy was armed with four Romeo-class submarines (Soviet project 633), which are docked and have not been operated for a long time (the last of them was decommissioned in November 2011).
In February last year, the commander-in-chief of the Bulgarian Navy, Rear Admiral Kirill Mikhailov, stated that the acquisition of new submarines is impossible at this stage and the fleet is looking for the possibility of purchasing a submarine with a resource of at least 10 years from the presence of the Navy of one of the "friendly countries". As an example of buying equipment in good condition at an affordable cost, he mentioned the acquisition of two minesweepers for the country's Navy in 2020 due to good relations with the Netherlands.
