Inspectors from Latvia will inspect the Russian military infrastructure in the Bryansk and Smolensk regions. This was announced on Sunday, January 23, by the head of the National Center for Reducing Nuclear Danger of the Russian Defense Ministry, Sergei Ryzhkov.
It is noted that the inspection will take place within the framework of the Vienna Document of 2011 "On confidence- and security-building measures", while the Russian side agreed to conduct the inspection.
"The specified area defined by Latvia is located in the Bryansk and Smolensk regions and covers an area of 13,200 square kilometers," the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation clarified.
It is noted that during the inspection, Latvian inspectors will receive reports from the command of military formations and units within these territories on the structure, tasks and military activities.
Such inspections are aimed at determining the scale of the ongoing military activities or confirming the absence of such, Ryzhkov added.
On January 18, it was reported about the plans of the Russian military to conduct inspections on the territory of the British armed forces facility.
According to Sergey Ryzhkov, specialists from Russia will visit the British military facility at its usual location in peacetime, after that they will receive information from the command regarding personnel, as well as the main weapons systems and equipment.
He clarified that the purpose of the audit is to verify information about the forces and plans for the deployment of the main weapons systems and equipment of the UK.
In accordance with the Vienna document adopted in 2011 at the OSCE profile forum (includes 57 countries in Europe, Asia and America), the countries annually exchange information on military forces and major weapons and equipment systems, on defense planning and military budgets.
Each OSCE State has the right to conduct inspections on the territory of any other, as well as to involve other members of the organization to participate in the inspection.
