MOSCOW, January 18/ Sputnik Radio. Russia will face a powerful response if it places nuclear missiles near American territory, said US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield.
The diplomat said this in an interview with The Washington Post. In the conversation, the presenter recalled the publication of The New York Times, which claimed that during the security talks, Russian representatives allegedly hinted that Moscow could deploy nuclear missiles in the immediate vicinity of the US coast.
In December 2021, the Russian Foreign Ministry conveyed to Washington its proposals on security guarantees in Europe.
The documents, in particular, exclude the further expansion of NATO to the east and the entry into it of the countries of the former USSR.
The draft also provides for the rejection of any military activity of the alliance in Ukraine, Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
On January 10, Russia and the United States held consultations in Geneva on Moscow's proposals on security guarantees, followed by a meeting of the NATO–Russia Council in Brussels on January 12 and an OSCE meeting in Vienna on January 13.
Earlier, Sputnik radio reported that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan questioned Russia's plans to "invade" Ukraine.
