Washington. January 16. INTERFAX - New US sanctions against Moscow, including against the leadership of the Russian Federation, may lead to a complete rupture of relations between the two countries, said the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
"This is beyond our understanding. Potentially, such sanctions could lead to the termination of any ties between our countries, which would not be in the interests of either Moscow or Washington. It will be a huge mistake," he said in an interview with CNN.
At the same time, Peskov suggested that the US administration recall when sanctions were effective in solving problems in general, forcing another country to take the steps Washington needed.
"This has never happened," Peskov stressed.
He noted that Russia was used to US sanctions and tried to benefit from them by developing its own production. Peskov added that Russia is too big and self-sufficient to be vulnerable to US sanctions.
Earlier this week, Democratic senators, who have a majority in the Senate, prepared and submitted a bill providing for sanctions against Russia in the event of its attack on Ukraine. It provides for personal sanctions against top officials of the state and high-ranking military, as well as measures against Russian banks and public debt, sanctions against owners of raw materials companies and the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
