The need to create a special organization to prepare a person for space flight arose after the selection of cosmonaut candidates began in October 1959
MOSCOW, January 11. /tass/. The Cosmonaut Training Center (CPC) named after Yu.A. Gagarin (part of Roscosmos) celebrates the 62nd anniversary of its foundation. This is stated in the message of the CPC, distributed on Tuesday.
"On January 11, 1960, the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force issued Directive No. 321141, which defined the organizational and staff structure of the Cosmonaut Training Center and the total number of personnel. This date is considered to be the birthday of the CPC," the message reads.
The need to create a special organization to prepare a person for space flight arose after the selection of cosmonaut candidates began in October 1959. Initially, the future cosmonauts lived in the Chkalovsky garrison.
"In the summer of 1960, the CPC began functioning in the Green Town, which is now known worldwide as the Star City," the center said.
CPC specialists have created a system for preparing cosmonauts, astronauts and space tourists for flight. In 2021, accelerated training of space flight participants was tested for the first time.
