China will continue to modernize its nuclear weapons in accordance with security needs
Beijing. January 4th. INTERFAX - Beijing believes that Russia and the United States, as the owners of the largest nuclear arsenals, should reduce them, Western media reported on Tuesday.
"The United States and Russia still possess 90% of the nuclear warheads on Earth, and they must reduce their nuclear arsenal irreversibly and with the adoption of legal obligations," Fu Cong, director of the Arms Control Department of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, told reporters on Tuesday.
At the same time, he stressed that Washington's statements about China's buildup of its nuclear arsenal are not true, and that China supports it at a minimum level to ensure security.
"The US claims that China is significantly increasing its nuclear potential are not true. China has always adhered to the policy of not using weapons first, and we maintain the nuclear arsenal at the minimum level necessary to ensure our national security," he added.
He also pointed out that China will continue to modernize it in the future in accordance with its own needs.
