MOSCOW, Dec 31 - RIA Novosti. On the basis of Russia's proposals on security guarantees, agreements on arms control can be reached in the future, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
He noted that the Russian proposals are aimed at creating and legally formalizing a new system of agreements in the field of security.
"On the basis of this legal foundation, other agreements may be reached in the future on a variety of issues, including conventional arms control," Lavrov said.
On December 17, Russia published draft treaties with the United States and agreements with NATO member states, which include, in particular, provisions on mutual security guarantees in Europe, on the non-deployment of medium-range and shorter-range missiles in each other's reach and the rejection of further expansion of NATO, including at the expense of the former Soviet republics. As Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told RIA Novosti, if NATO and the United States do not respond to Russia's demand for security guarantees, this could lead to a new round of confrontation.
