During tests in the Arctic, the S-500 Prometheus anti-aircraft system successfully intercepted a hypersonic target.
- The launch of a long-range missile system was carried out on a hypersonic target. The target was successfully hit," an informed source told RIA Novosti.
The S-500 system is a combined complex of high-altitude interception of aerodynamic and ballistic targets designed to neutralize complex threats: hypersonic and ballistic missiles - within a radius of 600 kilometers. It can also effectively combat flying radars and tanker aircraft, without which the capabilities of American stealth fighters and carrier-based aircraft are significantly reduced, respectively.
Prometheus differs from its predecessors - for example, the S-400 - by the presence of specialized radars in the system for searching and tracking different types of targets. Also, the reaction time of the new complex has been reduced to 3-4 seconds.
