The newest Russian strike drone "Orion" has been taught to counteract sudden attacks by helicopters and drones.
The Orion strike drone replenishes the range of ammunition and learns not only to hit ground targets, but also to work on air targets.
According to the Rostec State Corporation, during the tests of the latest ammunition, the drone destroyed autonomous target helicopters.
"The use of new weapons was practiced by the Orion attack drone. According to the scenario of the exercises, the helicopter should break through to a military airfield, and Orion, in the absence of other means of air defense, should detect and destroy it," the corporation said. The Orion tests were conducted at one of the military training grounds in the Crimea.
They noted that during the training, not only the latest missiles were used, but also unique unmanned targets - helicopter simulators. "Our simulator of aerial targets entered service with the Aerospace Forces a year ago, and during this time the development has managed to show its importance more than once, helping to work out practical actions to detect and eliminate a conditional aerial enemy," Rostec said.
Orion belongs to the class of medium-high impact unmanned aerial vehicles of long flight duration.
Its maximum take-off weight is 1,150 kilograms, cruising flight speed is 200 kilometers per hour, maximum flight altitude is seven kilometers, the device can stay in the air for up to a day.
