The Strategic Missile Forces plan to begin the phased replacement of heavy ballistic missiles "Voevoda" with a new generation ICBM "Sarmat" in 2022. The first new weapon will receive the Uzhur rocket compound near Krasnoyarsk.
- Work has been launched to prepare the head regiment for rearmament. The installation of mine launchers and a command post has been organized," Colonel-General Sergei Karakaev, commander of the Strategic Missile Forces, told Krasnaya Zvezda in an interview.
Currently, the Strategic Missile Forces are armed with eight types of ICBMs: mine "Avangard", "Voevoda", "Stiletto", "Topol-M" and "Yars", mobile "Topol", "Topol-M" and "Yars". In a few years, obsolete Soviet-made missiles will be decommissioned. They will be replaced by next-generation systems - in addition to the Sarmat, this is also a mobile ground complex with a new rocket.
The RS-28 Sarmat heavy-class liquid-fueled ballistic missile is distinguished from its predecessors by its significantly increased power and range. "The thrust reserve is such that it flies through both poles," the military says. In other words, it can deliver 10 tons of payload to any point of the globe along an inconvenient trajectory for the enemy.
