Tallinn. December 10th. INTERFAX - Estonian President Alar Karis has spoken out in favor of discussing security issues with all allies in the North Atlantic Alliance, the press service of the head of state reported.
"Estonia's position is clear - NATO will discuss European security issues, including Estonia, with all allies, and this was confirmed by everyone at the recently concluded meeting," Karis said after a phone call from US President Joe Biden to the heads of NATO member states of Eastern Europe.
The President said that third countries do not have the right to make decisions on the alliance's security activities, as well as to veto or talk about who can or cannot join NATO.
"This can only be a decision of the NATO countries. NATO's military deterrence is an issue that is decided only by NATO member states in accordance with the security situation," Karis said.
He stressed that the current crisis can be solved through existing communication channels and that communication with Russia should take place through the Russia-NATO Council.
According to him, "All allies must work together to change Russia's behavior."
Karis noted that "what is happening near the borders of Ukraine requires constant attention, and Ukraine needs our support. It is very important that the attention of NATO allies does not dissipate, and we are glad that US President Biden keeps Ukraine in the focus of world attention, which we hope will help ease tensions. Ukraine should be able to independently determine its future and its choice."
