London. December 8th. INTERFAX - Two Polish Air Force F-16 fighter jets escorted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea, the NATO Joint Air Force Command said on Wednesday.
According to the alliance, the F-16 fighters took off on December 7 from an air base in the Lithuanian city of Siauliai, where they are temporarily stationed to carry out a NATO mission to patrol the airspace in the skies over the Baltic states.
"F-16 received an order to "intercept" an unknown aircraft. It was visually identified as a Russian Il-20, which did not indicate the route and did not communicate with the air traffic control service during the flight in the busy airspace over the Baltic Sea," the report says.
