TSAMTO, December 6. The US Department of Defense announced the signing by the command for the conclusion of contracts of the US Army with General Dynamics Land Systems of an agreement for logistical support under the program "Foreign Military Sales" of the M1A1 MBT and M88A1/A2 BRAM fleet of the Iraqi Armed Forces.
The contract value is $15.249 million. The work will be carried out at the Taji base in Iraq and should be completed by December 31, 2022.
As reported by TSAMTO, in December 2008, the Iraqi Armed Forces sent a request for the purchase of 140 MBT M1A1 "Abrams" within the framework of the "Foreign Military Sales" program and their modernization to the M1A1M "Abrams" configuration, as well as the supply of other equipment.
The first batch of M1A1 Abrams was delivered to Iraq on August 7, 2010. Deliveries were completed in August 2011. According to official data, the total cost of 140 tanks amounted to $ 860 million, of which $ 804 million was paid by the Government of Iraq, and the rest was financed by the United States.
In December 2014, the State Department approved the delivery to Iraq under the Foreign Military Sales program of an additional batch of 175 upgraded M1A1 Abrams MBT, 15 improved M88A2 Hercules armored recovery vehicles (BRAM), as well as other equipment, weapons, ammunition and services worth up to $2.4 billion.
