Hong Kong. November 26. INTERFAX - South Korea monitors the DPRK's nuclear and missile activities in close cooperation with the United States, Yonhap reports, citing the Ministry of Unification of the two Koreas.
"The government continues to monitor North Korea's nuclear and missile activities with close coordination between South Korea and the United States," the agency quoted Deputy ministry spokesman Cha Dok Chol as saying.
"South and North Korea have agreed on a common goal of creating a nuclear-free Korean peninsula (...) for which both sides should make joint efforts," he said.
According to him, Seoul is also watching for possible signs of Pyongyang's upcoming events to mark the launch of a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) in 2017.
He added that at the moment no unusual actions have been detected.
A day earlier, the American resource 38 North, which tracks Pyongyang's activities, with reference to recent satellite images, reported that North Korea seems to be continuing to operate a nuclear reactor producing plutonium at the Yongbyon nuclear research complex.
"Steam is coming from the reactor's generator room, which indicates that at least one of the generators is working," the report says.
"In addition, water continues to be discharged from the auxiliary pipe into the channel leading to the Kuren River," 38 North notes.
