The S-500 and S-550 anti-aircraft missile systems will become the platform of the new air defense system. They will jointly provide anti-missile and anti-space defense of Russia's strategic facilities.
This was stated to TASS by a source close to the military department. He added that the S-550 and S-500 Prometheus face different combat missions. The first anti-aircraft missile system will not replace the second. The S-550 is not more perfect than the S-500, it is a somewhat lightweight version of it. And, according to the source, she has other forceful methods of influencing threats.
Two anti-aircraft missile systems will become the platform of the new air defense system, and together with the S-350 Vityaz and short-range complexes, they will be able to neutralize all possible targets. However, the new system will not be a resuscitation of the Soviet missile defense system. When creating it, a number of unrealized concepts were taken into account.
Earlier it was reported that the S-550 missile defense system being created in Russia will be designed to destroy orbital space targets. Among them are the American unmanned spacecraft X-37, which, according to the military, can be used as a space weapon.
