The production of South Korean K9 Thunder self-propelled artillery units will be organized in Egypt. The agreement on this is planned to be signed at the International Defense Industry Exhibition EDEX-2021, which will begin its work in Cairo on November 29.
There are no specific details about the deal yet, but it is expected that these combat vehicles will replace some of the outdated artillery systems.
Currently, in addition to about a thousand towed guns, the Egyptian ground forces have about five hundred not the newest self-propelled guns. One hundred and twenty of them are SP-122, which are peculiar hybrids of American M-109 hulls and new towers with Soviet 122-mm D-30 howitzers installed in them.
There are also 155-mm "one hundred and ninth" themselves: about one hundred and sixty M109A2 and more than two hundred M-109A3. 122-mm and 130-mm wheeled self-propelled guns were manufactured directly in Egypt on the chassis of the Ural-4320 and KrAZ-6322 all-terrain vehicles.
K9 Thunder belong to one of the most modern and popular self-propelled guns on the international arms markets
In addition to South Korea, they are in service with the armies of India, Norway, Estonia and Finland. They are expected to be assembled in Australia.
The maximum firing range of 155 mm active-reactive ammunition is 40,000 meters. The rate of fire is 6 rounds per minute. The engine power is 1000 hp. The maximum speed on the highway is 67 km/h. The power reserve is 480 km . The crew is five people.
Great News! Egypt's Deputy Minister of Military Production has officially announced that Egypt will finalize a contract with South Korea at #EDEX2021 for manufacturing the K-9 Thunder self-propelled Howitzer locally. pic.twitter.com/wGejlKJMNL
