The main goal of the S-550 mobile missile defense system, which is currently being developed in Russia, will be American X-37 unmanned spacecraft capable of carrying nuclear charges. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to two sources in the military-industrial complex.
According to the agency interlocutor, the S-550 will specialize in the destruction of ballistic and orbital space objects, including nuclear warheads of intercontinental missiles. He stressed that among the typical targets of the Russian missile defense system can be called planning hypersonic units and drones, such as the X-37.
It is noted that in fact the new system will be a modification of the S-500 with a specialization in intercepting ballistic and orbital targets.
Earlier, TASS military observer Dmitry Litovkin said that the Russian S-550 missile defense system probably works on the principle of kinetic interception of targets, which will eliminate the formation of "nuclear ash" over the heads of Russian residents when intercepting enemy missiles, for example the United States. The author notes that "in the case of the missile defense system in the USSR, the interception of nuclear warheads over the Central Industrial Region of the country was carried out by a counter nuclear explosion." "Everything burned up in the plasma cloud - false targets, deceptions and the warheads themselves. Thus, the "nuclear ashes" still fell on the country.
