The first S-550 strategic missile defense (ABM) system will be put into service in the Russian army until 2025. This was reported to TASS by a source close to the Ministry of Defense.
"The S-550 has already been created in hardware. The first C-550 will be delivered to the Aerospace Forces of the Russian Federation by 2025," the agency's interlocutor said at the Dubai Airshow 2021 International Air Show.
He clarified that the supply of missile defense is provided for under the state armament program until 2027.
Initially, the army will be supplied with a brigade set of S-550, reports TASS.
"A mobile launcher with a hypersonic missile will be used in the S-550 system," the source added, specifying that there is no marine version of the complex.
On November 9, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced on a conference call with the leadership of the country's armed forces that work is underway in the Russian Federation to create a new S-550 air defense system.
It was also announced at the meeting that the first serial sample of the S-500 Prometheus will be delivered to the troops in the near future.
On October 13, the S-500 air defense systems entered service with the 15th Special Forces Army of the Russian Federation, which covers Moscow and the Central Industrial Region of the country.
The Russian military conducted test firing of the S-500 SAM in July. According to the Ministry of Defense, the tests confirmed the tactical and technical characteristics and reliability of the Russian air defense.
The S-500 Prometheus (ROC Triumfator-M) is a long-range and high-altitude interception complex with a high missile defense potential capable of intercepting ballistic missiles. The system strikes not only ballistic, but also aerodynamic targets and cruise missiles within a radius of about 600 km.
