Washington. November 6th. INTERFAX - The American vessel HOS Red Rock, which is used by the US Navy as a carrier of the SURTASS-E experimental sonar reconnaissance system, entered the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, follows from the data of the international ship tracking system (AIS).
The ship's operator, Hornbeck Offshore, has a long-term contract with the US Navy's Maritime Transportation Command to provide services to the US military for tracking submarines of a likely enemy for a total of about $40 million.
The operations of the vessel, which is designed to perform tasks for the oil and gas industry in coastal areas, have previously been recorded in the North Atlantic, including on the NATO anti-submarine defense line between Greenland, Iceland and the United Kingdom (GIUK), which hosts the SOSUS sonar anti-submarine sound surveillance System, near Bermuda near the east coast of the United States, as well as near England in the English Channel.
