TSAMTO, November 1. Sudan will continue to implement agreements on the establishment of a Russian military base in the country, Sudanese military leader, commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces Abdel Fattah al-Burhan said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
The RIA Novosti news agency was the first media outlet to talk to the military leader of Sudan after recent events in the country related to the detention of officials and the dissolution of authorities.
"We have an agreement, part of which is the creation of a base. We are constantly discussing this topic, and we have some comments that we need to eliminate. We are committed to international agreements and will continue to implement them to the end," al-Burhan said, answering the question whether recent events in the country will affect the creation of the Russian Navy base in Port Sudan.
Earlier, an informed source in the Sudanese military department told RIA Novosti that Sudan considers it necessary to amend the agreement on the establishment of a Russian naval base in Port Sudan on the Red Sea coast in order to receive economic assistance from the Russian Federation, subject to a lease for five years with the possibility of signing an agreement for 25 years. The Embassy of Sudan assured RIA Novosti that the country did not request any payments from the Russian Federation, and reports about this are "groundless."
The agreement to create a Russian Navy base in Sudan became known in November 2020. According to the document, the maximum number of personnel of the Naval station, whose work will be carried out by the forces and means of the Russian side, will not exceed 300 people. No more than four Russian ships will be able to be there at the same time.
