Moscow. October 29. INTERFAX - Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov discussed with Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kyani the prospects for international efforts to restore the JCPOA, the Russian Foreign Ministry reported.
"On October 29, consultations were held between the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation S.A.Ryabkov and the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran for Political Affairs A.Bagheri Kyani," a statement published on the website of the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
"The main attention was focused on the prospects of multilateral efforts to restore the sustainable implementation of the joint comprehensive plan of action for the settlement of the Iranian nuclear program (JCPOA). We proceed from the fact that work in this direction should be continued," Smolenskaya Square noted.
"A wide range of issues on the international agenda and certain aspects of the development of bilateral relations were also considered during the consultations," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
The deputy head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry arrived in Moscow on Thursday for talks. Bagheri is the main Iranian negotiator for the restoration of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian Nuclear Program.
In 2015, Iran and the "six" countries - the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany - concluded a nuclear agreement - the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear deal, according to which the republic should allow IAEA inspectors to its nuclear facilities in exchange for a step-by-step lifting of sanctions.
Former US President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from the JCPOA in 2018 and resumed anti-Iranian sanctions, which prompted Tehran to gradually abandon compliance with some of the terms of the deal.
From April to June of this year, Iran and a number of world powers held six rounds of talks in Vienna with the aim of restoring the JCPOA. Currently, negotiations are on pause: Iranian officials have stated that Tehran will be ready to continue negotiations after the inauguration of the new Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi in early August and the formation of a new government.
