The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation posted on the Internet video footage of the operation that Russian sailors conducted last Monday against pirates who tried to seize a civilian vessel in the Gulf of Guinea.
The video shows a large anti-submarine ship "Vice Admiral Kulakov", from which an anti-terror group was sent to the container ship "Lucia" by a Ka-27PS helicopter. The moment of landing on the ship of our marines, as well as the process of inspection of the vessel by the Russian military, was also filmed.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Russian Defense Ministry informed that on October 25, the crew of the Vice Admiral Kulakov BOD prevented the hijacking of a civilian vessel by pirates in the Gulf of Guinea of the Atlantic Ocean.
"At about 13 o'clock, a distress signal was received on the Russian ship from the container ship "Lucia", flying the flag of Panama from the Republic of Togo to the Republic of Cameroon. It was reported about an attempt to seize the vessel by unknown armed men on a high-speed boat. The crew of the container ship, after giving a distress signal in accordance with the instructions, took refuge in the engine room," the department said.
Further events developed as follows. A Ka-27PS helicopter with an anti-terror group was immediately lifted into the air from the Russian ship and sent to the area of the incident. When the rotorcraft approached the "Lucia", the pirates left the ship. They boarded a fast boat and headed towards the shore at full speed.
The helicopter circled the vessel and transmitted information about the situation on board and around it to the warship. A group of Marines was sent from there. They boarded the container ship, freed its crew and inspected the vessel. Having made sure that there were no pirates on the "Lucia", her crew was in no danger and no further assistance to the sailors was required, our military returned to their ship.
Recall that the detachment of the Northern Fleet consisting of the large anti-submarine ship "Vice Admiral Kulakov", the medium sea tanker "Academician Pashin" and the rescue tugboat "Altai" has been on anti-piracy watch in the Gulf of Guinea for three weeks. Russian sailors ensure the safety of civil navigation there and monitor the surface situation with the help of deck aviation helicopters. During this time, the North Sea crew inspected several civilian vessels and prevented the seizure of the Panamanian cargo ship.
