The Pentagon reported that the reason for the failure of the hypersonic glider tests in Alaska was a malfunction of the accelerator.
- The failed accelerator is not part of the hypersonic program, - DefenceNews quotes the words of the representative of the US military department Timothy Gorman. The accident occurred shortly after the launch vehicle took off from the Pacific Cosmodrome on Kodiak Island.
Gorman recalled that the development of hypersonic weapons is associated with very complex technologies and assured that the creation of controlled aircraft capable of reaching speeds of more than Mach 5 is a priority area of work.
The US Army is conducting parallel development of three types of hypersonic weapons: tactical for the Navy and long-range missiles for the Air Force and Navy. On October 20, separate tests of hypersonic technologies were conducted on Wallops Island, Virginia, their results are not reported.
