TSAMTO, October 12. The Republic of Korea intends to join the group of countries that are the world's largest arms exporters within a few years, the Defense Procurement Programs Agency of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan (DAPA) reported.
According to Jane's Defense Weekly in DAPA, the agency's ambitions are based on major new investments in military technology, measures taken to restructure the country's defense industry and an approved strategy that prioritizes export potential.
According to DAPA estimates, the volume of South Korea's defense exports in 2020 reached 1.7 trillion. won (1.43 billion dollars), which corresponds to the indicator of 2019. In the next few years, DAPA expects to reach a much higher level.
In particular, as a representative of DAPA told Jane's, the Republic of Korea expects to enter the top five largest exporters of defense products in five years.
DAPA is implementing a strategy that aims to reformat the current structure of the defense industry, focused primarily on domestic demand, into an export-oriented structure. To achieve this goal, priority attention will be paid to the export potential at the stage of developing certain systems to meet the highest international standards.
