The infantry Division of the South Korean Army and the Hanwha Defense company have begun testing the Intelligent UGV reconnaissance ground robot with a six-by-six wheel formula. According to Aju Daily, the military will check how the car functions in unmanned mode and with remote control.
Research work on the creation of Intelligent UGV has been conducted since 2018. This spring, the South Korean Defense Procurement Program Administration announced their successful completion and commissioned Hanwha Defense to create a robot in hardware.
Intelligent UGV is an electric robot with a six-by-six wheel formula. It weighs two tons, can carry up to 500 kilograms of payload and travel more than a hundred kilometers on a single charge. Intelligent UGV is able to bypass obstacles, control the path and move independently along a pre-planned route in case of loss of contact with the operator.
The robot is suitable for reconnaissance and logistics missions, evacuation of the wounded and close combat. It can detect the sound of firing and shoot back in the direction of the source of this sound. Intelligent UGV works in remote control mode or offline. The robot's armament includes a combat module with a machine gun.
Hanwha Defense reported on October 8 that the infantry division of the South Korean army has begun testing the Intelligent UGV in combat conditions. The military will check whether the robot is suitable for reconnaissance missions. They will appreciate its functions such as remote control, unmanned movement based on GPS data, and the vehicle's weapons system with remote control.
The South Korean military is also testing other ground robots. The first unmanned vehicles in the South Korean army were two multi-purpose ground-wheeled robots Hyundai Rotem, which we wrote about earlier.
