The US Navy has created a new Greyhound destroyer task force ("Greyhound"), which can be quickly deployed in the Atlantic to counter Russian submarines. This is reported by the portal Institute of the US Navy USNI News.
The fact that the destroyers will be able to fight Russian submarines, said the commander of the surface forces of the US Navy in the Atlantic, Rear Admiral Brendan McLane.
"The ships will be ready to perform a whole range of tasks, including tracking Russia's underwater activity in the Atlantic and protecting our country's territories from the sea," he said. Greyhound will be based at the US Navy bases Mayport in Florida and Norfolk in Virginia. According to McLane, the group will be in full combat readiness by June 2022.
The structure will include the destroyers Donald Cook and Thomas Hudner. In January 2022, the destroyer Sullivans will join them, followed by Cole and Gravely, and the Donald Cook will go for maintenance.
In May, the Ragnar Viking joint exercises of the Royal Navy (Navy) of Great Britain, the Naval Forces (Navy) and the Marine Corps (KMP) of the United States, as well as the French Navy and the Royal Norwegian Navy took place. During the exercises, the countries showed an "offensive" against Russia. The stated purpose of the event is to show and test the possibilities of joint use of the fleet and marines of the countries participating in the exercises in the North Atlantic, in particular, the ability to simultaneously deploy an aircraft carrier strike group (AUG) and an offensive amphibious group.
