The US Army has approved a contract with the American company Dynetics for the construction of prototypes of a system for protection against drones and cruise missiles. According to Defense News, Dynetics will supply the military with 16 launchers and 60 interceptors by 2024.
The American army today uses the Israeli Iron Dome anti-missile system to protect against cruise missiles. But this is a temporary solution, until the military has adopted one of the developments created under the IFPC program.
Raytheon and Rafael companies offered the army an American-made Iron Dome with a Tamir interceptor missile, and Dynetics-an Indestructible Shield mobile ground-based system. It is an installation based on a universal MML with an AIM-9X Sidewinder interceptor developed by Raytheon.
The "Indestructible Shield" can operate in a 360-degree range, hit several targets simultaneously and is suitable for integration with a single control system for air and missile defense complexes. Both teams demonstrated the capabilities of their systems at the White Sans training ground this year.
The US Army chose Dynetics to build a prototype system against drones and cruise missiles. The American company must deliver 16 launchers and 60 interceptors to the military by March 2024. It is assumed that by the fourth quarter of 2023, the army will already have 12 launchers at its disposal. Having received the prototypes, the army can conclude a contract for the production of 400 installations with interceptor missiles.
Not only traditional interceptors can be part of air defense systems. Earlier we wrote about a combat laser with a power of 250-300 kilowatts, which Lockheed Martin creates to protect objects from missiles, shells and mortar mines.
