The state Corporation Roscosmos and the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) recommended submitting proposals to the government on the creation of a new Russian Orbital Service Station (ROSS), which should replace the International Space Station (ISS) by 2028. This is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the press service of the state corporation.
"Following the meeting, the presidium and the bureau recommended that the state corporation Roscosmos submit proposals to the government of the Russian Federation on the need to develop the ROSS and on the procedure for conducting negotiations with partners on the ISS project on issues related to ensuring the final stage of the functioning of the Russian segment of the ISS," the ministry said.
It is assumed that ROSS will be an "evolutionary step" in the development of technologies for the exploration of the Moon and Mars. It will allow developing and implementing innovative scientific and technical programs and applied experiments in space.
It is planned to complete the operation of the ISS by 2028. By this time, Roscosmos intends to launch the Russian Orbital Station into operation. In early September, the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that they plan to start deploying the Russian orbital service station in five to six years. It will be based on the Scientific and Energy Module( NEM), which was originally planned to be sent for docking with the ISS in 2025. To work as part of ROSS, the module will be finalized, which may take about two years.
