NASA management expects to extend the operation of the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 10 years. This was stated on September 13 during the international Gagarin Conference by the head of the NASA manned flight program, Kathy Luders.

According to her, the American side is "working hard" to extend the work of the ISS for at least 10 years. "We have worked on this in our administration and are now moving towards publishing our plans for the next 10 years, "she said during a broadcast on the Roscosmos YouTube channel.

As Luders noted, NASA is working with partners around the world to make sure that the ISS meets the needs of the industry.

In April, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian government Yuri Borisov noted that the deterioration of the ISS could have serious consequences, up to a catastrophe. According to him, Russia is able to independently finance the project of a new orbital station, but is ready to invite foreign partners to cooperate.

On July 31, during a meeting of the Presidium of the Scientific and Technical Council, experts came to the conclusion that due to the aging of a significant part of the ISS equipment, the further operation of the Russian segment of the station after 2024 creates additional risks.

It was proposed to complete the operation of the ISS by 2028 and create a national manned space complex in low-Earth orbit — the Russian orbital service Station. On the same day, the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, said that he intended to submit a report to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the prospects for creating a new station.

According to Rogozin, the new Russian orbital station will be as autonomous as possible and will receive elements of artificial intelligence. As specified by the " Newspaper.ru", in Russia they intend to create a station whose efficiency will be several orders of magnitude higher than that of the ISS.

The deployment of the new Russian orbital station is planned to begin in five to six years. The Scientific and Energy Module will act as the basic module of the new orbital station.
