Flight tests of the new Russian intercontinental missile " Sarmat "will start in the near future, the head of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin said on Saturday, September 4.
"Now we are making a Sarmat rocket, which has much higher characteristics. We are on the threshold of flight design tests, " the head of the state corporation said on the YouTube channel "Solovyov Live".
At the same time, Rogozin expressed the hope that Russia will not have to resort to using this missile, but the presence of such a potential that "provides a guarantee of an absolutely calm, independent life of our citizens for 30-40 years ahead is a big deal."
On September 2, the head of Roscosmos said that the new Sarmat intercontinental missile, which is being prepared for flight tests, will become the basis of the Russian nuclear shield for 30-40 years.
On August 10, Ukrainian military expert Oleg Zhdanov suggested that the Sarmat missile system being prepared by Russia will have no analogues in the world. He noted that no air defense system will be able to intercept this missile.
At the end of June, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Sarmat, the Zircon hypersonic missile and the new S-500 air defense system will soon be on combat duty. According to him, hypersonic weapons — Avangard and Dagger complexes-have already been put on combat duty.
The Sarmat ICBM (RS-28 strategic complex) was developed at the Makeev State Missile Center. According to experts, the Sarmat can deliver a separable head unit weighing up to 10 tons to anywhere in the world, both through the North and South Poles. The missile can deliver warheads along trajectories that significantly complicate their destruction even by promising missile defense systems.
