Omsktransmash (part of the Uralvagonzavod concern of the Rostec State Corporation) is negotiating with potential customers on the possible modernization of Soviet T-55 tanks. This was announced to TASS by the general director of the enterprise Igor Lobov at the international military-technical forum "Army-2021"held in the Moscow region.
"We have developed various options for upgrading the T-55 tank. Currently, we are negotiating with various customers, if such a need arises, we are ready to work in this direction," he said, answering the question whether the company is upgrading T - 55 tanks.
The T-55 medium tank is considered the world's first mass-produced tank equipped with an automatic anti-nuclear protection system. He was able to conduct combat operations in the conditions of the use of nuclear weapons. It was created on the basis of the T-54 tank, it was produced from 1958 to 1979. He also became the first tank in the army to receive the Drozd active protection complex. The T-55 and its modification, the T-55A, were widely exported and are still in service with many states. According to various sources, in total, about 50,000 units of T-55 tanks were built at the enterprises of the Soviet Union.
