Intel has signed a contract with the US Department of Defense, according to which it will lead a program to create the production of advanced chips in the United States, TechCrunch reported on Monday.
At the moment, there are no enterprises in the United States that can guarantee to produce advanced integrated circuits for private use and offer ready-made commercial solutions for use in critical Pentagon systems. The production of such components is mainly concentrated in Southeast Asia, American companies are usually engaged only in the design of microchips.
To promote the development of chip production in the United States, a special program Rapid Assured Microelectronics Prototypes – Commercial (RAMP-C) was developed. According to the signed contract, the newly created Intel division, Intel Foundry Services, will be responsible for the implementation of the first stage of this program.
Within the framework of RAMP-C, Intel will also cooperate with IBM, Cadence and Synopsys. Earlier , the company announced plans to invest about $ 20 billion in the construction of two new factories in Arizona.
Recall that the world is faced with a global shortage of chips . The shortage of chips will not be eliminated at least until the end of the year, according to the leading manufacturer of semiconductor products — Taiwan Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).
