KUBINKA (Moscow region), 24 Aug-RIA Novosti. The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation has signed the first contract with the NGO of mechanical Engineering for the supply of hypersonic missiles "Zircon", the military department told reporters.
"A state contract has been signed for the supply of the 3M22 rocket (the Zircon hypersonic missile). During the International Military-Technical Forum, the contract was awarded to the general director of the NPO Mashinostroeniya Alexander Leonov, " the Defense Ministry said.
The universal hypersonic cruise missile is designed to defeat sea and land targets.
At the end of June, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that the Zircon hypersonic missiles, capable of reaching speeds of about Mach 9 numbers and hitting targets at a distance of more than a thousand kilometers, will be put on combat duty in the near future.
