Moscow. August 23. INTERFAX-Moscow and Washington at the current stage of relations are far from the lowest point of the Soviet-American confrontation during the "Caribbean crisis", when the world was on the verge of a nuclear war, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
"We are far from the lowest point of the Soviet-American confrontation in the form of the" Caribbean crisis" of 1962, when we were literally on the verge of a nuclear war, "Lavrov said in an interview with the Hungarian newspaper Magyar Nemzet, published on Monday.
At the same time, answering the question of whether the current tense security situation is comparable to the period of the "cold war", the minister noted that he does not consider such historical parallels appropriate.
"The military-political situation in the world today has similarities with the period of the cold war, and big, fundamental differences," the Russian Foreign Minister explained.
The Minister noted that " unlike the cold War era, not everything, although much, in this area depends on Russian-American agreements."
"There are much more players and factors influencing the situation in the field of international security today," he added.
However, according to Lavrov, " it is impossible to ignore the contradictions between the main world players, which, unfortunately, continue to deepen."
