Moscow. August 22. INTERFAX - The number of space debris objects with a diameter of more than 10 cm in near-Earth orbit is about 30 thousand, said Georgy Medovnikov, General Director of the Vympel IAC.
"There is a problem of space debris. According to our estimates, there are already about 30 thousand fragments of space debris larger than 10 cm. And I'm not talking about the size of garbage less than 10 cm - there are already more than a million, " Medovnikov said in an interview with the Zvezda TV channel.
According to him, there are also about 3 thousand satellites in orbit at the moment.
On August 4, Roscosmos reported that the total weight of space debris in orbit exceeds seven thousand tons. According to the state corporation, every day the automated warning system for dangerous situations in near-Earth space (ASPOS OKP) receives from three to ten messages about the approaches of Russian spacecraft with potentially dangerous objects.
In June, the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, advocated the creation of a unified international system for monitoring space debris.
On June 5, Rogozin said that the creation of thousands of groups poses a threat to the ISS. According to him, Roscosmos proposes to oblige the creators of such satellite systems to reduce the spent devices from orbit.
