Washington. August 20. INTERFAX - The United States of America will impose new sanctions against Russia in September in connection with the incident with opposition leader Alexei Navalny, the State Department said in a statement released on Friday.
In particular, the sanctions are imposed in accordance with the US Law "On the Control of Chemical and Biological Weapons and the Prohibition of their Military Use" of 1991.
Additional sanctions will include "restrictions on the import of certain types of Russian firearms" and ammunition. They will also affect the export of certain " nuclear and missile products and technologies "in accordance with the Law" On Export Control Reform " of 2018, which restricts the export of dual-use goods outside the United States.
The sanctions will come into force after publication on September 7, 2021 in the US Federal Register and will be in effect for at least 12 months. The sanctions can be lifted only after this period, if Russia fulfills a number of conditions described in the Law. In particular, it should " provide guarantees that it will not use chemical weapons in violation of international law, that it is not preparing for the use of chemical weapons in the future, and that it is ready to allow international inspectors to check the guarantees, as well as that it will compensate Navalny for damage."
Earlier on Friday, Washington also imposed sanctions against nine persons associated with the incident, and against two scientific structures of the Russian Defense Ministry.
A year ago, on August 20, 2020, the Russian opposition leader Navalny became ill during a flight from Tomsk to Moscow. The plane made an emergency landing at the Omsk airport. The oppositionist was hospitalized in a coma in the intensive care unit of the Omsk hospital. Since August 22, by the decision of the family, Navalny has been undergoing treatment at the Charite clinic in Berlin, and then the rehabilitation process in Germany. Bulk in January 2021 returned to Russia after treatment in Germany and was immediately arrested. Currently, he is in the correctional colony N2 near the city of Pokrov, Vladimir region, where he is serving his sentence in the so-called "Yves Rocher"case.
On March 2 of this year, the European Union and the United States imposed sanctions against the Russian Federation because of the incident with Navalny.
