Washington. August 18. INTERFAX - The evacuation of civilians carried out by the United States at the Kabul airport is likely to become the second largest operation of its kind in American history, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces Mark Milley said on Wednesday.
"This could be the second largest civilian evacuation operation in our history," he said at a press conference at the Pentagon.
In turn, the head of the Pentagon, Lloyd Austin, said that the United States is aimed at increasing the ability to remove people from Kabul on a daily basis.
Earlier in August, the Taliban movement (banned in the Russian Federation) took control of the territory of Afghanistan, including Kabul. In this situation, many foreigners and Afghans tend to leave the country through the Kabul International Airport. The United States and some of its allies are ensuring the security of the airport and organizing the evacuation of people.
