Ukraine intends to withdraw from two agreements of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) on outer space. The relevant information follows from the agenda of the meeting of the Government of the country for Wednesday, August 18.
A draft decree of the President of Ukraine Vladimir Zelensky on "the procedure for maintaining and using space infrastructure facilities in the interests of implementing space programs"has been submitted for approval by the government.
In addition, the government intends to terminate the agreement "on the procedure for financing joint activities for the exploration and use of outer space". In Russia, these agreements are not valid since 2019.
At the same time, the explanatory notes to the documents state that these agreements in modern conditions do not correspond to the national interests of the Ukrainian side. They also, as noted in the statement, have no practical significance for Ukraine.
Earlier, on July 28, it became known about the decision of Ukraine to stop participating in the protocol on the approval of the regulations on the Interstate Space Council of the CIS countries.
On July 4, the country withdrew from the next CIS agreement, namely, from the Agreement on the main areas of Cooperation of the CIS member states in the field of consumer Protection.
On April 21, the government of Ukraine approved a draft law that provides for the country's withdrawal from the CIS agreement on the creation of an interstate reserve of biological products and other animal protection products. It was noted that the country's participation in the agreement does not make sense, since Ukraine has not used the drugs listed in the list for the past 10 years.
Ukraine is one of the countries that stood at the origins of the creation of the commonwealth in 1991. At the same time, it has not ratified the charter of the organization developed in 1993. After the coup d'etat of 2014, the new leadership of the country announced its intention to leave the agreements concluded within the framework of the CIS.
In March last year, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine decided to terminate the country's chairmanship in the CIS and begin withdrawing from the commonwealth. Kiev has not been working in the statutory bodies of the organization since 2018.
