The introduction of the road into operation will increase the transport capabilities of Eastern Siberia, the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation noted
VERKHNEZEISK /Amur region/, August 12. /TASS/. The reconstruction of the eastern branch of the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) by the end of 2024, after the road is put into operation, will increase the transport capabilities of Eastern Siberia, increase the capacity of the mainline and the volume of transit traffic, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.
"Today we laid a stone symbolizing the beginning of the reconstruction of the eastern branch of the Baikal-Amur mainline. This is a 340 km long section from Ulak to Fevralsk. The importance of this segment of the BAM for the country's economy is huge, " Shoigu said on Thursday at the ceremony of laying a memorial stone on the occasion of the beginning of the reconstruction of the BAM.
"By the end of 2024, after the road is put into operation, the transport capabilities of Eastern Siberia will be increased, the capacity of the highway and the volume of transit traffic will increase. In addition, Russia will be able to expand its access to the markets of the countries of the Asia-Pacific region," Shoigu said.
He stressed that to date, modern towns have been quickly erected throughout the entire section to accommodate and provide labor for military railway workers. "In addition, the necessary automotive, engineering and special equipment has been involved in the construction. The high-quality preparatory work allowed us to start implementing the decision of the President of the Russian Federation to increase the capacity of the BAM in a timely manner," the minister said. He expressed confidence that the railway troops, without whose active participation no complex railway construction project can do, will adequately cope with the tasks set.
Shoigu stressed that every person of his generation has certain associations associated with the "construction of the century", as the Baikal-Amur Highway was then called. "For me, this is primarily hundreds of thousands of our compatriots who implemented the largest and most expensive infrastructure project in the history of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Someone went here "for the fog and the smell of the taiga", someone was more attracted to high earnings. However, both of them worked in the most difficult conditions of permafrost in an uninhabited territory. Now in this sense, little has changed, there is still the same harsh climate and kilometers of impassable taiga, " Shoigu said.
BAM is a railway in Eastern Siberia and the Far East, the second main railway (along with the Trans-Siberian Railway) of Russia to the Pacific Ocean. It connects Taishet and Sovetskaya Gavan. The total length is now 4.3 thousand km. BAM and Transsib are operating at the limit of capacity.
