MOSCOW, Aug 7-RIA Novosti. The ground testing of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile is being completed, this strategic complex will ensure the complete security of Russia for 30-40 years ahead, said Dmitry Rogozin, Director General of Roscosmos.
"Now we are working on creating a unique complex in general, this is the Sarmat complex... In fact, we are already completing the ground testing of the entire system… And we are doing it in such a way that we can lay the foundation for 30-40 years ahead by creating such a powerful intercontinental ballistic missile, which will ensure the complete security of the country and its independent development for these many, many years ahead," he said on the YouTube channel "Solovyov LIVE".
"Sarmat" (RS-28) will replace the world's heaviest strategic missile "Voevoda "(according to the NATO classification - "Satan", RS-20B). Development work on the Sarmat project began in 2011. The new missile will be able to attack targets both through the North Pole and through the South Pole, overcoming missile defense systems.
"Sarmat" is being developed by the Makeev Center and will be produced at Krasmash.
The launch tests of the rocket have already been completed at the Plesetsk cosmodrome. Flight tests of the Sarmat are scheduled to begin in 2021 and be completed in 2022. The commissioning of the first regiment with "Sarmatians" is scheduled for 2022 in the Uzhur rocket division.
The main tactical and technical characteristics of the Sarmat missile were revealed for the first time at the Army-2019 forum. Its firing range is 18 thousand kilometers, the launch mass is 208.1 tons, the payload mass is more than 10 tons, the fuel mass is 178 tons, the length of the rocket is 35.5 meters, the diameter is 3 meters, the type of warhead is a separable head with individual guidance units.
