Rostec intends to develop the first Russian processor of a new generation on the open RISC-V architecture for computers and servers.
The partner of the state corporation was the developer of data storage systems and servers Yadro, part of the" X holding " Alisher Usmanov. Representatives of both companies told about the project, Vedomosti writes.
27.8 billion rubles will be spent on the work, of which 18 billion will be allocated by Rostec and its subsidiary National Technologies, and 9.8 billion will go from the federal budget. By 2025, the processors should be ready, and the equipment with them will begin to arrive to Rostec structures, institutions Ministry of Education and Science, Ministry of Education and Ministry of Health.
Oleg Izumrudov, director of the Consortium of Domestic Developers of Data Storage Systems, pointed out that the characteristics announced by the developers look unrealistic in the future for decades. For example, currently processors of this architecture operate at a clock frequency of 450 megahertz, and Russian companies want to reach 2 gigahertz.
This parameter is specified in the description of the future processor. It also says that it will be an 8-nuclear device with a topological size of 12 nanometers. The representative of Yadro claims that the RISC-V architecture is considered the most promising, it is engaged in Google, Samsung, Huawei, Nvidia, Western Digital, Qualcomm, Alibaba. Own national programs to support it have been launched in the following countries The European Union, China, Israel, India.
However, the head of the direction of import substitution of equipment CROC Natalia Sofronova recalls that the development has found mass application in microcontrollers and Internet of Things devices. The architecture really looks like a good future, but there are no general-purpose RISC-V processors on the mass market at all.
However, the director of the Department for coordinating the implementation of national projects United Instrument-Making Corporation (manages Roselectronics, part of Rostec) Andrey Matveenko explained that at first, Russian Baikal-M processors will be used in servers and computers for deliveries to state institutions.
The business plan of the project provides that 60 thousand computers and servers based on new processors will be sold already in 2025. Their total cost will be 7 billion rubles.
In February, it was reported that due to problems with domestic developments, the government sharply weakened the criteria for switching to its own software. Now even software with minor modifications will be considered Russian, which will allow you to fulfill the set plan. In April, the authorities decided to fight the reluctance of state institutions to use domestic developments.
