The German Bundeswehr has officially launched the work of the" space " headquarters. This was announced on Tuesday, July 13, by the DW TV channel.
The main task of the headquarters is to protect satellites and monitor threats in outer space. The main attention will be paid to asteroids and space debris, and not to aliens, the report says. The opening ceremony was attended by German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.
As she noted, Germany lives on information and exports, so its security is highly dependent on outer space.
"Our civil and military satellites are resources that we cannot do without. The same situation will be true not only in Germany, but also around the world, " she said.
According to the German Defense Minister, space has become not only the territory of cosmonautics. Attacks in space are no longer hypothetical, said Eckehard Brose, president of the German Federal Academy of Security Policy.
"Some states consider outer space as a field of future military conflict," he said in a statement.
In December 2020 [...], a new US national space strategy was published, which states that outer space is becoming a potential arena for military operations between the United States and its opponents. The headquarters of the Space Command of the US armed Forces is located in Alabama.
In April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia supports the start of negotiations on the development of an international instrument prohibiting the deployment of any types of weapons in outer space. Moscow proposes to take as a basis the corresponding Russian-Chinese draft treaty submitted at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva in 2014.
