MOSCOW, July 9/ Radio Sputnik. The militants of the" Islamic State " * wanted to gain access to radioactive sources in Russia, according to the report of the state corporation Rosatom for 2020.
An unofficial document of the US Embassy with information about the plans of the IG * got to the Russian Foreign Ministry, after which the department turned to Rosatom. In the autumn of 2020, unscheduled target inspections of the "object control of the state of physical protection systems"were held at all nuclear and radiation facilities of the industry.
Also, together with the territorial bodies of the FSB and the security service, they checked the operability of the complexes of engineering and technical means of physical protection and the effectiveness of the reaction forces, organizing joint training to stop the actions of conditional violators.
Materials from radioisotope sources are not suitable for creating nuclear weapons, but they can be used to make a "dirty" bomb – a hypothetical munition with ordinary explosives containing radioactive substances. When it is detonated, the container with isotopes is destroyed, and due to the shock wave, the radioactive substance is sprayed around. The use of such weapons is referred to as a kind of nuclear terrorism.
