The United Engine Corporation of Rostec has successfully completed the first stage of testing the PD-8 gas generator for SSJ-NEW aircraft, the press service of Rostec reported.

UEC specialists have achieved stable gas generator launches with successful access to the maximum mode in accordance with the test program. A full-scale sample of the gas generator will be presented at the MAKS-2021 exhibition.

The gas generator, which is called the "heart" of the aircraft engine, consists of a high-pressure compressor, a combustion chamber and a high-pressure turbine – it is this part that drives the power plant.

As part of the tests, computational and experimental work was carried out, the optimal configuration of the gas generator - its electrical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems-was found, after which the specialists began "hot" engine starts using real aviation fuel, which were successful.

"The PD-8 is the" youngest " in the line of aircraft engines created by Rostec, it is designed for short-haul airliners. The gas generator of this power plant was assembled and installed on a test bench in May. During the first stage of testing, the specialists successfully worked out the engine start and operation at maximum mode. The tests allowed us to experimentally confirm the correctness of the design solutions laid down. The experience gained will be taken into account in the manufacture and testing of the following samples of the gas generator, as well as prototypes of the PD-8 engine," the Rostec aviation cluster said.

The PD-8 engine is being created by a broad cooperation of UEC enterprises for the SSJ-NEW aircraft, an updated version of the airliner that will be distinguished by a high level of import substitution. The design of the power plant uses technologies developed during the creation of the PD-14 engine, which is designed for medium-haul airliners.

Currently, the SSJ-100s are equipped with SaM146 turbofan engines developed by UEC-Saturn together with the French company Snecma in the first half of the 2000s. The French side is responsible for the production of the gas generator of the power plant.

As previously reported, Rostec is also working on the creation of the largest aircraft engine in the domestic line - the PD-35 for wide-body long-haul aircraft. This is one of the most ambitious projects of the Russian aircraft industry, previously in the USSR and Russia, engines with similar characteristics were not created.
