The head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, noted that to monitor CO2 emissions on the topic of so-called carbon units, it will be necessary to create special equipment for spectral analysis
ST. PETERSBURG, June 17. /TASS/. Roscosmos is considering two options for monitoring CO2 emissions from space: creating a separate group or equipping spacecraft already included in the Sphere program with special equipment. This was reported to TASS by the Director General of Roscosmos Dmitry Rogozin.
The head of the state corporation noted that to monitor CO2 emissions on the topic of the so-called carbon units, which were mentioned by Russian President Vladimir Putin, it will be necessary to create special equipment for spectral analysis.
"Either we will put these observation elements on one of the existing groupings laid down in the Sphere, or we will do it as a separate spacecraft, add a compact grouping to the Sphere," Rogozin said on the sidelines of the Global Conference on Space Exploration GLEX - 2021.
According to the Director General of Roscosmos, a decision on this issue has not yet been made. "Within the next week, in accordance with my instructions, RCS JSC should submit its proposals for the installation of such equipment on our prospective group," the head of the state corporation explained, adding that the final decision will be made before the fall.
Rogozin recalled that some Russian satellites ("Canopus", "Meteor", "Stork") are already engaged in ecomonitoring. They also monitor fires, river spills, and flooding from orbit. The new equipment will allow detecting CO2 emissions, greenhouse effects, and mathematically processing this information.
"For Russia, this is extremely important, because it is among the three countries (plus Brazil and Canada) that are the main "lungs" for our entire planet, for all of humanity. Therefore, we want to understand what our balance is within the country with emissions, what problems are created for us by our neighbors who have a different attitude to environmental issues, " the head of Roscosmos said.
Carbon units
In early June, Russian President Vladimir Putin at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum noted that a fundamentally new market is being created in the world, where so-called carbon units will be traded. According to him, this is a kind of asset that characterizes the amount of absorption of harmful emissions into the atmosphere by a piece of land or forest. The President added that already today many countries and associations plan to accept these units from exporters, compensating for emissions from the production of imported goods.
