In 2026-2028, Roscosmos allows the transfer of control of the Russian segment of the International Space Station (ISS) to a private company. Dmitry Rogozin, General Director of the state corporation, has named a new way of earning money on the international project "Komsomolskaya Pravda".
According to him, the potential of the ISS is "exhausted, but not completely", and therefore it is necessary to determine the timing of Roscosmos ' participation in the international project.
Rogozin noted that for the maneuvers to correct the orbit of the ISS, performed by the Russian cargo spacecraft "Progress", can " pay not us, but our partners." "We can, for example, at the turn of 2026-2028, transfer the reins of management to a private company that could pay for our actions on the ISS. And they are important — for example, keeping the station at a certain height or maneuvers, " the head said.
The head of Roscosmos noted that these proposals are a matter of negotiations.
The CEO also announced the construction of the future Russian space station. According to him, it will get an open architecture, "when one module that has exhausted its resource can be replaced with another." Rogozin compared the new Russian station to the Picatinny rail.
In April, Rogozin said that the state corporation, after withdrawing from the ISS project, allows the transfer of the Russian segment of the orbital laboratory to NASA. According to the CEO, the Russian segment of the station is worn out by 80 percent, and its maintenance "will require approximately the same funds that will be needed from 2025 for the deployment of a separate national Russian orbital station."
